Time to Make a Splash

Michelle’s home in Glendowie, Auckland, had a large and sunny backyard, perfect for a family. Well, almost perfect. She loved the idea of creating a backyard haven complete with a beautiful pool for her children to enjoy, and an outside room to extend the family’s living space.

Michelle reached out to Kate Ryan, her local Zones Landscaping Consultant, to seek advice and see what was possible. With dozens of outstanding outdoor renovations in her portfolio and an eye for detail, Kate had just the sort of expertise Michelle was looking for. 

During a free initial consultation, Kate was able to see the site in person, and explain more about the Zones process to Michelle. Michelle knew that pool construction was complex, so she had the perfect fit. As a Zones Landscaping Consultant, Kate would manage every element of the project, from design and construction to consent and scheduling, providing a straightforward and stress-free service. With such an experienced project manager at the ready, Michelle was ready to ‘jump in’ and start her dream pool project!

Designing the Dream

With plenty of space available, Michelle’s backyard was perfect for designing a stylish, family-friendly pool area. Michelle wanted the outdoor room to flow from house to pool to give the family streamlined outdoor living and entertaining options. Around the pool, anti-slip measures would be important, as well as a wide, shallow entry to make things as safe as possible for the children. Shade needed to be prioritised, too, given how harsh the New Zealand sun can be.

Kate set to work designing a concept that would work for Michelle’s budget and style. The new outside ‘room’ would feature a deck, a pergola with Thermopanel roofing and stylish shutters on the sides to provide shelter from the elements. It would also incorporate LED lighting. The duo worked through several design options until they found the one that provided everything Michelle wanted while still being within the agreed budget.

Similar consideration was given to the pool fencing. By incorporating both glass and aluminium, Kate designed an attractive modern look at an acceptable price. 

Transformation Begins

Once Michelle was happy with both the design and budget, the transformation could begin.

Kate drew on her established network of trusted professionals and then expertly managed every element of Michelle’s build, from obtaining council consent and liaising with the excavators during repeat visits to get the levels right, to scheduling the electrician and ensuring the right plants were supplied. She kept Michelle up to date every step of the way and was adept at managing unforeseen and frustrating delays caused by the pool company and the weather.
