From a sloping backyard to a stylish splash zone, this Milford property underwent a true transformation with help from Zones Landscaping Consultant Logan Bridgens.
Michelle’s Milford property consisted of a simple sloping lawn backyard with a few fruit trees, but she knew it had far more potential than that. A vision she had for the space was the installation of a pool, with surrounding decking that would make the outdoor area more practical, usable, and enjoyable.
Having secured the services of a pool contractor, Michelle knew more expertise was needed to bring her backyard vision to life, so she reached out to her local Auckland Landscaping Consultant, Logan Bridgens.
When Michelle reached out to Logan at Zones Landscaping, she was well prepared with her request. The pool was still eight to nine months away, but she knew the project required fencing, decking and landscape design to make it complete.
Following the Zones five-step process, Logan began with an initial consultation to understand what it was Michelle wanted to achieve in her backyard. This helped Logan to prepare designs and concept plans that brought Michelle’s vision to life. Knowing what the different elements of the design were that Michelle really wanted to include enabled Logan to prepare a fixed quote accurate to Michelle’s project, as well as a proposed eight-week timeline to take the project from concept to completion.
Having received an initial budget indication of between $55,000 - $77,000, Logan worked with Michelle to revise the quote, removing some initial items and adding additional elements. This brought the final cost to $63,000, excluding a minor variation.
The quote that Logan prepared included the landscape design, which he completed while working closely with Michelle’s chosen pool provider. He also completed all the hardscaping elements including the decking, pool shed, stairs, and vegetable gardens, as well as organising the glass and metal pool fencing.
Due to the size and location of Michelle’s backyard, she had chosen an in situ-built fibreglass swimming pool, which became the central feature of Logan’s landscape design. Creating an upper deck around the pool, Logan connected the outdoor area to the home with additional decking and stairs leading up to the pool. He also ensured there was space for a raised hot tub and included a bespoke hardwood pool house to hide all the newly installed swimming pool equipment.
To meet Michelle’s aesthetic vision for the new space, Logan included garden art with a New Zealand native theme, and carefully potted planting positioned around the pool area.
Michelle’s backyard can only be described as a true transformation. Gone is the sloping lawn and in its place is a stunning rectangular swimming pool, framed with a timber deck and complemented by stunning outdoor artwork. Native grasses positioned in oversized pots complete the aesthetic appeal.
Dark charcoal coloured slat boundary fencing provides a contemporary vibe to the modern garden space, while meeting consent requirements, and providing privacy to the family’s new outdoor area.
Raised garden beds outside the pool area add a subtle sustainable vibe to the landscape, while the new pool shed provides a practical storage solution without being a focal point.
Logan’s favourite feature of the landscape is the raised pool decking, but the piece de resistance is the standalone hot tub, adding a real air of spa-like indulgence to Michelle’s backyard.
The outcome is a true transformation of an underutilised backyard into a modern, practical, yet stylish outdoor zone. With room for entertainment, enjoyment, and sustainable living, this outdoor area ticks all the boxes for Michelle and her family.
Logan’s design and project management of the pool installation and landscaping was very much appreciated by his client:
“Very pleased with our pool deck with steps and the surrounding area, also the shed built for the pump in a tight tricky area. Logan and his team always worked to a professional standard, working around the pool installation delays due to adverse weather conditions and respected how clean the site was left each night.” - Michelle, Zones client
