Black structures create a bold statement and often produce a stunning contrast with surrounding materials and foliage. With the visual impact it creates, it is no surprise that a number of designers and architects specify timber structures should be painted or stained black.
Unfortunately using darker colours can make timber deteriorate at a faster rate than lighter colours. Dark colours will absorb the heat from the sun, as the timber heats up and cools down, it expands and then contracts. This leads to cracking and movement so where possible we would recommend you make your timber structures light.
If you do wish to have a darker coloured structure we would recommend engineered timber this includes composite decking, Acoya decking and LVL, thermally modified products all of which are proven to be more stable than solid timber.
